Homegrown is a Ringling College of Art and Design thesis film centered on the idea of finding value in the present, even when life doesn’t align with expectations. The story follows a character navigating a moment of uncertainty, learning to shift their perspective and recognize that meaning doesn’t always come from change, but from understanding what’s already there. It’s a grounded, emotional piece that leans into subtle character moments rather than large plot-driven events, focusing on internal growth and reflection.
I worked as the Director of Photography on the film, where my approach was to keep the visuals natural and honest to the environment. We leaned into available light and simple, motivated setups to maintain a sense of realism, allowing the performances and setting to carry the story. My focus was on using framing and lighting to mirror the character’s emotional progression, starting more restrained and gradually opening up as their perspective shifts. It was a project that emphasized restraint and intention, reinforcing the idea that strong visuals don’t have to be overcomplicated to be effective.
